Acne is a complex skin condition that can develop in our teens and in adulthood. Not all acne is the same and therefore not all acne can be treated the same. It’s important to understand the source of the acne to better develop a treatment plan around it. The key to treating acne is to understand the underlying reason for it. Is the acne hormonal, bacterial or caused by inflammation related to diet? These are just a few reasons why acne may be occurring. Here are 6 things your teenager can do to help control their acne.

  1. Cleanse

Washing your face in the morning and in the evening is super important in any skincare routine but especially important in young acneic skin that is also oily. Use a cleanser that contains Tea Tree and Willow Bark to naturally remove that dead layer of cells.

  2. Diet

Many teenagers do not include enough healthy food in their diet. Often times skin problems are connected to the digestive system. In this case, it is super important to stay away from greasy foods and foods that have high amounts of sugar. Try and focus on fermented foods or foods that help detox the liver and target gut flora. Stay away from sugary drinks and instead drink lots of water throughout the day!

  3. Sleep

I get it…teenagers don’t sleep. However, sleep can play an integral part in any person’s
skin condition especially teenagers. Do your best to get a good night’s sleep as often as possible. Your skin will thank you.

  4.  Sheets

On that note, change out your pillow case every other night. Your pillow case harbors dirt and oils from you skin and is a breeding ground for bacteria. If you notice more of a breakout on one side of your face than the other, it could be the side you sleep on the most.  You could consider trying a silver thread pillow case to help keep bacteria away.

  5.  Exfoliate

This is a crucial step in your skincare routine. You should exfoliate at least once a week with a gentle exfoliant to help with cell turnover which will result in brighter, healthier looking skin.

  6. Face Mask

Treat your skin by adding a facial mask to your routine, especially a clay mask. Clay masks work great on acne prone skin because it helps soak up the oils on your skin and unclog pores. Charcoal masks work well too as they help pull impurities out of your skin and also unclogs pores. There are many masks to choose from so find one that works well for your skin without irritating it.
